It is spent getting oriented, fighting procrastination, deciding where to start, revisiting the same considerations repeatedly, and failing to surface the counterarguments that would sharpen a conclusion. Before answering my main question, identify every assumption embedded in my request that, if wrong, would lead to a bad outcome. Then tell me which assumptions you think are most likely to be incorrect and why. Only after that, proceed to answer the question itself.

Every piece of writing makes rhetorical choices about what to foreground and what to omit. The skeptic instruction surfaces challenges the original author either ignored or minimized.

Part Two: Prompts That Structure Your Own Thinking

Prompt 6: The Pre-Mortem Prompt

I am about to [describe a decision or plan]. Assume it is one year from now and this has gone badly wrong. Walk me through the most likely reasons it failed. Be specific about failure modes, not generic about risk. Then tell me which of those failure modes I should address before proceeding.

The pre-mortem is a cognitive technique developed by research psychologist Gary Klein, formally described in Harvard Business Review. When run through Claude, a mental exercise that might take an experienced team an hour can be completed in minutes. The critical instruction is “be specific about failure modes, not generic about risk.” Without it, Claude defaults to platitudes about market conditions.

Prompt 7: The Steel Man Generator

I hold the following position: [state your position]. Construct the strongest possible version of the opposing argument, not a weak version I can easily dismiss. Then tell me which of its points are most likely to be correct and why.

Analyze this situation using six perspectives in sequence: facts only (what do we actually know), emotion and intuition (what does the gut say), caution (what could go wrong), optimism (what is the upside), creativity (what unconventional approaches exist), and process (what steps would make this decision well). Label each section clearly.

Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats framework has been used in organizational decision-making since the 1980s. When encoded as a Claude prompt, all six modes run in sequence rather than requiring a facilitated group session. The main practical benefit is that the optimism pass and the caution pass sit in the same document, preventing the common pattern where skeptics dominate early discussions and kill ideas before their potential is explored.

Prompt 9: The Second-Order Effects Prompt

If [decision or event] happens, walk me through the first-order effects. Then walk me through the second-order effects, things that happen as a result of the first-order effects. Then the third-order effects. Flag where your predictions become less certain.

Associated with investor Howard Marks and widely documented in decision-making literature. Functionally equivalent to a structured scenario planning exercise. The instruction to flag where predictions become less certain prevents Claude from presenting a speculative chain as confident analysis, which is a real failure mode.

Prompt 10: The Feynman Explainer

Explain [concept] to me as if I understand the basics but have never thought carefully about the implications. Then tell me the three things that most people who think they understand this concept actually get wrong. Then tell me what a genuine expert would say that a well-read amateur would miss.

The three-stage structure mirrors the pedagogical progression that distinguishes surface familiarity from genuine comprehension. Prompt 11: The Decision Matrix Prompt

I am weighing [list 2–4 options]. For each option, assess it against the following criteria: [list your criteria]. Then weight those criteria by importance, with your reasoning. Produce a clear recommendation with your confidence level and what would change your recommendation.

Anthropic’s official documentation highlights structured output formats as particularly effective for complex analytical tasks because they force Claude to be explicit about trade-offs rather than burying them in prose. The confidence level instruction prevents overstatement of certainty, and the “what would change your recommendation” instruction produces a built-in sensitivity analysis.

Prompt 12: The Assumption-to-Test Converter

I believe [state a core assumption your plan depends on]. Help me design the cheapest and fastest way to test whether that assumption is true before I commit further resources. What is the minimum evidence that would either confirm or disprove it?

Converts a planning conversation into an experimental design conversation, grounded in lean startup methodology and the scientific principle of falsifiability. The “cheapest and fastest” constraint counteracts Claude’s default tendency to propose thorough research programs when a quick test would suffice.

Prompt 13: The Clarity Forcing Prompt

I am going to describe a situation and I want you to help me figure out what I actually think. Ask me questions until you can summarize my position in three sentences. Then tell me what I am avoiding saying directly.

Tom’s Guide documented Claude as “unusually good at finding the shape inside that mess.” The instruction to identify what the user is “avoiding saying directly” prompts Claude to name the subtext, the conclusion the person is circling but not yet willing to state. This is what a good executive coach does and what Claude can approximate when given the right framing.

Prompt 14: The Risk Triage Prompt

Here are all the risks I have identified with this plan: [list them]. Prioritize them by: likelihood of occurring, severity of impact if they do occur, and how much I can actually do to mitigate each one. Then tell me which risks I should stop worrying about entirely.

Addresses the false equivalence problem in risk management, where a catastrophic but improbable risk gets the same attention as a likely but manageable one. The instruction to identify risks worth ignoring reflects how experienced risk managers actually work, not how they are taught to work.

Prompt 15: The 10-10-10 Frame

I am considering [decision]. How will I feel about this decision in 10 minutes? In 10 months? In 10 years? Where do those three perspectives disagree, and which one should carry the most weight?

Developed by Suzy Welch and published in her 2009 book of the same name. The instruction asking where the three perspectives disagree names the tension between short-term and long-term considerations explicitly. The final instruction forces a normative judgment rather than leaving you with three equally weighted views that cancel each other out.

Part Four: Prompts That Accelerate Research and Synthesis

Prompt 16: The Expert Synthesis Prompt

You are a senior analyst who has read everything written about [topic] in the last five years. Summarize the state of genuine expert consensus. Then identify where experts disagree and what is driving that disagreement. Then tell me what question the field has not yet asked but probably should.

Anthropic’s official prompt engineering guide explicitly recommends role assignment because it activates vocabulary, framing conventions, and analytical habits associated with that role. The three-stage structure mirrors how a high-quality literature review is actually structured.

Prompt 17: The Multi-Source Cross-Check

I am going to give you several sources that make conflicting claims about [topic]. For each major point of disagreement, identify which source has the stronger evidence and why. Flag any claims that none of the sources adequately support.

AI Unpacker’s January 2026 analytical prompting guide noted that Claude’s architecture is specifically tuned for deep comprehension and synthesis across large documents. The instruction to flag claims with inadequate support prevents Claude from treating the presence of a claim across multiple sources as evidence of its truth, a common failure mode in research synthesis.

What is the minimum body of knowledge I need and in what order should I acquire it? What are the three most common mistakes smart people make when they approach this field for the first time?

Operationalizes the concept of minimum viable understanding, distinct from comprehensive mastery. The specificity of the goal dramatically changes what knowledge is relevant. The ordering instruction matters because knowledge domains have prerequisite structures, and learning the wrong thing first creates misconceptions that take significant effort to unlearn.

Prompt 19: The Pattern Recognizer

Here is a collection of [customer feedback / user behavior data / market observations]: [paste content]. What patterns do you see that I have probably already noticed? What patterns am I probably missing? What is the most surprising thing in this data and what might explain it?

The three-part structure separates known patterns from unknown patterns. The “surprising” instruction is particularly useful because surprise indicates where prior assumptions are wrong, which is more valuable than confirmation of what was already believed.

Prompt 20: The Documentation-to-Action Converter

Here is a [policy / specification / research paper / contract]: [paste content]. In plain language, tell me what I actually need to do differently because of this document. What am I allowed to do that I might have assumed I could not? What am I prohibited from doing that I might have assumed was fine? What is ambiguous and might require a judgment call?

Anthropic’s help center documentation notes Claude is particularly well-suited to translating complex language from tax rules to legal contracts into actionable plain-English guidance. The three-part structure, obligations, permissions, ambiguities, mirrors how a lawyer reads a document. The ambiguity instruction prevents false certainty where reasonable people can disagree.

What Actually Makes These Work

Four mechanisms show up consistently across the research. Explicit sequencing helps: Anthropic’s documentation recommends numbered steps to prevent Claude from conflating distinct tasks. Role assignment works: domain-specific context activates different vocabulary and reasoning patterns. Negative instructions backfire: DreamHost’s December 2025 testing of 25 prompt techniques found that telling Claude what not to do increases the likelihood of that behavior. And extended thinking is real but context-dependent, rated 10 out of 10 for complex reasoning tasks and 3 out of 10 for simple ones.

The value of these prompts is not that they replace thinking. It is that they replace the inefficient parts of thinking. What remains is the judgment, and that still belongs to you.
